US Chess Discussion

Welcome! This blog has no connection with the USCF. It's a blog where I provide chess fans with general information about US Chess as well as the USCF. It's also a site where everyone can productively discuss or ask questions about various USCF issues! Your contributions and comments are welcome! PLEASE KEEP IT CIVIL & RESPECT OTHERS! Enjoy! Your opinions are needed

February 1, 2007 is the deadline for the first candidate statement in Chess Life. Each candidate is entitled to 150 words. What do you think I should put in my statement?

I'd say don't come out too strong. I think people that come out of the gates making accusations are frowned apon. There will be plenty of time to point out what's wrong with the USCF and the people you are running against.

Maybe just talk about who you are and what you can bring to the USCF. Try not to emphasize that the USCF is in disarray.

You only have 150 words, so don't make any negative statements about any other candidate. Just state what your vision is for USCF and the things you'd like to do for it. 150 words will run out real fast.

You know what you want to say. You've been saying it since the day you announced your candidacy. You started this blog saying it.

It's funny that a few weeks ago I started a thread on the USCF Forums called "Vision Statement from the Candidates". I pointed out that you already had one and invited your opponents to share theirs. I had thought that it would be a nice gesture, giving them an opportunity to match you.

Instead there was a lot of attacks and the thread was closed down.

All you should do is use the basic statement you've been using all along. (In the lexicon of American Politics, we call it a "stump speech".)

You can expand on your basic goals in your next month's statement.

We've already gone around on this issue but it bears repeating. Please don't go signing onto any more third-party letters like that Lafferty case. (The reader can see the matter discussed by Susan earlier in this blog.)

From now on you choose your own issues, and your own words for your own stands on those issues and not someone else's. And you do it on your timetable, not someone else's.

Invite opinions by all means. I'll offer mine just like everyone else. But if I ever start writing statements for you to sign and demand you sign them, you bust me in the chops and send me packing.
